Lets Go Diving-22 Aug News

The water conditions have improved greatly. We have been getting reports of up to 12m visibility at the breakwall on Tuesday 20th with lots of fish life at Fly Point and the Pipeline. Temperatures in the water are still 17 degrees although we have been getting some glorious weather through out the days up here, warm enough to forget its winter J Both boats are going out on Saturday and Sunday this weekend, so if your interested and haven’t book a spot yet call the shop.

Night time high tides are back next week. Rowan is always keen for a night dive so call the shop if you’re interested. We also have a great range of torches in store to suit every diver from $60.

The Narki Gnomes are enjoying their time inBaliand have moved on from the Tulamben resort to the second stage of the trip in Candidasa. We haven’t seen a lot of photographs as yet although I’m expecting to see a lot of video from the trip.

Whilst in Bali Adam and Emma are testing and comparing the Go Pro Hero2 and Intova SP1 Sport Pro. Both compact video recorders are available in store, so keep an eye out for their reviews. Rowan and another group of Narki Gnomes are off to Eua, Tongaon the 4th September, so we are looking forward to seeing one of these cameras in use with the humpback whales and cave systems.

Don’t forget if you are keen to dive and you hold current Narki Gnome Dive club membership, you can take advantage of our free buddy service. Just call us to let us know when you are keen to dive and we will make sure you have a buddy. Also if you are keen for a particular dive site or boat dive which is not scheduled please let us know as we will do our best to get one planned for you.

Lets Go Diving-15 Aug News

Water temperature is still holding at 17-18 degrees, although over the weekend visibility ranged between 0-5m across the shore dive sites. We had a nice dive on the high tide this morning (Wednesday 15Th) with visibility varying between 5-8m. With calmer seas and good weather approaching we are hoping the visibility will be back up before the weekend.

The weather wasn’t ideal for diving last weekend. Boats were canceled due to large seas and the visibility in the bay had dropped considerably. But that didn’t mean that we didn’t still have fun – Adam taught Todd and Gary on their rescue course whilst Rowan was teaching and Advanced Open Water course with Alice, Andrew, Sam, Liza and Brad. Some challenging dives, although everyone was able to have a great time and take home some valuable experiences from the weekend.

Emma, Adam and a long list of Narki Gnomes are off toBalion Saturday, Leaving Rowan to look after the shop while away ;) if your around pop in for a dive, coffee or catch up. Rowan has promised not to make sweeping changes during the week but who knows what surprises he has in store for Narki gnomes staying home.

Lets Go Diving-8 Aug News

It has been a fantastic week of diving. Visibility has ranged from 7m on shore dives to 15m on boat dives and the water has been 18 degrees. We have seen huge jewfish on The Breakwall, a grey nurse at Mrs Murphys on Tuesday, and Tracy the turtle venturing out to meet divers at Fly without the tracker on her shell.

Mid week dives have been proving very popular lately. Dont forget if you are keen to dive and you hold current Narki Gnome Dive club membership, you can take advantage of our free buddy service. Just call us to let us know when you are keen to dive and we will make sure you have a buddy. Also if you are keen for a particular dive site or boat dive which is not scheduled please let us know as we will do our best to get one planned for you.

Dont forget that this Saturday (11 Aug) it is Club day! It looks like we will have to cancel the 10am single club dive due to swell. So the plans have changed slightly. Meet us at 12.30 for a BBQ lunch at the shop then come with us for a shore dive at 3.17pm.

We have a PADI Rescue Diver course planned this weekend. If you have not already done this course it is a great way to increase your situational awareness, helping you avoid accidents and have confidence to act in case something were to occur to your dive buddies. This course is highly recommended for all divers.

Scubapro Everdry 4 Review

Admittedly I was not very prepared for winter this year – I was waiting for the summer that never really happened. So when I received the news that my drysuit zip was not repairable I was nervous I would have to endure a very cold winter.

Last time I was in the market for a drysuit I needed a made to measure suit. In the last 7 years there seemed to be a lot of advances in Trilaminate suits, but I was disappointed to discover they were mostly unisex sizes, which just dont suit my normal lady curves.

Then I saw the Scubapro Everydry 4. I may not get excited about shopping for clothes, but this ladies cut black suit with metallic silver graphics got me excited! At just $1399 RRP, it was also a hot price!

When the order arrived I was very suprised at how light the box was. After I read the fineprint (yes I just ordered it based on hot looks & sizing), I realized it was made from a 4mm high density neoprene which weighs 50% less than any other traditional drysuit.

Putting on the suit for the first time I felt like I was putting on a wetsuit, with its super soft, stretchy neoprene and slim fit I did not feel like an ‘oompa lumpa’ as I was used to feeling in my other drysuit. It was very similar to my 7mm suit , but in this black & silver number I feel I looked much cooler!

OK, so that is enough about looks, how does it perform in the water?

The first thing I noticed when I descended was how warm my neck was. The Everdry has a neoprene rolled neck, over this I had placed my hood, and then secured the outer neck warmer. It was just like I was wearing a big warm scarf!

Then I realised I had descended too easily with only 6lbs more than what I use in my 7mm suit. (After a few more dives I have settled that 2-4lbs more is all the extra weight I need).

The best thing about this suit though is how exceptionally comfortable it was to dive in. It was not too dissimilar to my 7mm, with only minor adjustments needed to offset a squeeze. I was not cumbersome like my old drysuit. I also was able to wear the socks under my normal dive boots so I did not need to use a larger sized fin. I have now done quite a lot of dives in this suit and I have remained warm with just a thin undergarment. I also have found the pocket to be very handy. Most importantly though I have remained dry every dive.

Emma’s verdict: A very comfortable & warm dry suit, of excellent quality, with great looks at an exceptional price. I am very happy and highly recommend!

Below are some of the tech details or Watch the features of the Scubapro Everdry 4:

  • Soft & comfortable like a wetsuit, but keeps you warm & watertight like a dry suit. Everdry4 was created for demanding and recreational divers wanting easy-to-wear advanced dry suit protection. In professional black with modern, metallic silver graphics and logos, this suit says SCUBAPRO quality and spirit throughout.
  • 4mm high-density neoprene maintains optimal thermal insulation but weighs 50% less and is significantly softer than a traditional dry suit.
  • Ensures better protection and buoyancy stability at depth than a traditional wetsuit.
  • Featuring Si-Tech balanced side-activated inlet and adjustable outlet valves, facilitating better buoyancy operation and increased comfort.
  • Soft flexible neoprene socks, fitting a broad range of feet and body combinations. The suit can be worn with HD Drysuit Boots or neoprene boots.
  • Durable dry back zipper with neoprene protection flap keeps water out.
  • Convenient and roomy pocket with zippered closure keeps essentials close at hand.
  • Available in both men’s and women’s sizes. And our lady’s version is a specifically cut and shaped pattern for perfect fit on the female form.
  • Reversed construction rolling neoprene neck seals guarantee watertightness without the hair-pulling or potential allergy risks of traditional latex. Two exterior velcro closures offer complete adjustment and comfort.
  • Easy-to-repair neoprene wrist seals for no-leak insulation and comfort.
  • Elastic, adjustable & removable suspender system for a better fit.
  • 5/6.5mm anatomically shaped hood with prolonged neck & soft skin-like neoprene face & neck seals, plus air release valve system, keeps you warm.
  • Overall quality finishing and details: every millimeter is well thought out and perfected for a premium diving experience.

What is CHUG?

Underwater research group

What is CHUG?

(Article shared by CHUG President Will Owyong)
Underwater research groups provide a unique opportunity to create a bridge between the scientific and diving communities, and promote marine education and community awareness and involvement in marine conservation projects in their local area.
Until 2012, the Hunter region lacked a community-based underwater research and monitoring group. Elsewhere along the NSW coastline, groups of community members with a passion for the marine environment had established groups. The Combined Hunter Underwater Group (CHUG) Inc fills the gap between the Great Lakes’ GLUG (Great Lakes Underwater Group) and Central Coast’s TUG (Terrigal Underwater Group).

CHUG’s Objectives

To work in partnership to raise awareness, increase understanding, and involvement, in the underwater environment to deliver positive outcomes for the Manning and Hawkesbury marine bioregions”.

CHUG aims to bring together divers affiliated with dive clubs and dive shops in the region to seek funding opportunities to undertake collaborative monitoring and research programs. CHUG will also work in partnership with local established coastal environmental groups to enhance and supplement their activities.

CHUG’s Projects

In general, CHUG will provide an opportunity to involve interested community members in marine research projects with a conservation focus and foster greater awareness of the marine environment. In many regions underwater research groups are initiating research projects that are simple to conduct but scientifically credible, enabling participation by a broad range of members. These projects can provide management agencies (State government, Marine Park Authorities and local government) with the necessary data to assist informed decisions.

The initial focus of CHUG is documenting marine debris at identified dive sites. Future projects will be dependent on member interest, skills and funding. They may include fish identification surveys, clean up events, monitoring sand movement and marine talks. Suggestions are welcome.

Get Involved!

The next marine debris survey will be at Shoal Bay Sunday 5 August. New members/divers are all given a lesson on how to conduct a marine debris survey which entails explaining the processes involved, handling equipment, logging data, buoyancy issues, and then putting it into practice. If a diver does not feel confident in handling the extra equipment then we advise them to come along for the dive and observe the processes in action.

If you are a scuba diver, freediver, snorkeler or have an interest in, and commitment to, positive marine conservation outcomes from Port Stephens to the Central Coast and would like to meet like-minded people then email [email protected] and/or fill in our membership form.

Lets Go Diving-18 July News

The dives last weekend were nothing short of stunning. We had in excess of 20metre vis on some dives!! The highlight was not the whale, seal, or dolphin sightings, nor was it the big schools of yellowtail, the cuttlefish or turtles but a big pregnant grey nurse which we could see the pup moving in her belly!! If you have not already seen Jimmy’s amazing picture of this please go to www.facebook.com/divenelsonbay. And while you are there don’t forget to “like” our page :)

Thank you to everyone who came to our club day at Broughton. For those of you who could missed out you should clear your schedule now for next club day on the 11th August. More details to follow shortly, but we have something else fun planned.

Lets Go Diving-4 July News

Last weekend was fantastic diving. Sharks at Broughton, Seals at Cabbagetree, sightings of humpback whales and hammerheads during transit, lots of life on both the OAKLAND and plane wrecks and to top it off the deep course divers & Tec gang enjoyed the 12m vis and 17 degrees. Night dives this week have had excellent visibility and the forecast promises the swell and wind will drop off in time for the weekend.

If you have not already put your name down for club day next weekend don’t miss out. We will be doing a double dive at Broughton Island – bring a picnic lunch as we will be going ashore for our surface interval at a special price for club members who book online. Then later that evening we will be having a presentation from Dive Adventures on what trips we have in store for travel in 2013.

Talking of travel – it is less than a month before our freedivers go to beautiful Tufi. There is only 1 spot left so call us now if you want to escape the winter!! If you prefer to blow bubbles there is also one spot left on Adam & Em’s trip to Bali. We still have spots on the Tonga (Eua) trip in September with Rowan, it will be a combination of snorkelling/freediving & SCUBA. Great whales and cave system too!

We have the new Go Pro Dive housings and the GoPro HD HERO2-Outdoor Edition in stock. They have proved very popular and we are seeing some great dive footage. Have a look at some footage of diving the plane wreck.
