We had a great turn out for Club day this week. Lots of divers turned up for our drift followed by a great shore dive at Fly Point. The water is warming up with a scorching 19 degrees!

We are all getting pretty excited about the dive trips coming up. We have had lots of interest to the Truk & Kavieng trips so far, as well as our trip to the mighty Coolidge in May. If you are keen please get your booking forms in early as spots are filling up fast.

We love the big tides this week! The water temperature has been 18 degrees and visibility of at least 10m. It should be a great weekend of diving especially with Club day planned for this Saturday – we are hoping to see lots of you get wet!

The tides this week are early and as the week progresses getting BIG! We are looking forward to seeing you all at the next club day on 20 Oct when we will be doing big drift from Fly to the pipeline. Have a look below for the plan.

So far we have had a great response to the overseas trips we have planned for the coming 12 months. Given our Fiji and Palau trips have booked out if you are keen to travel with us we encourage you to put your deposits and forms in soon to avoid missing out. Below you will find some information about Truk and Kavieng, with information about our trip to dive the Mighty Coolidge, Vanuatu in May 2013 being sent out next week.

We have noticed the Christmas decorations starting to appear in the shops so we have slowly started to bring in some great new products (you can leave some hints for Santa). We have had another great week of weather and diving! The vis has ranged between 7-10m and the temperature 17/18 degrees. It makes all the difference to get out and have the spring sunshine to warm up

Rowan and his gang of Narki Gnomes are swimming with humpback whales inEua,Tongaright now. Meanwhile we are seeing more photos of our recentBalitrip being posted on facebook page, including clips of the Mola Mola, mantas and one of the most surprising sightings – a submarine which cruised past us!

We have had a stunning week of weather! The forecast looks good for North Rock at Broughton Island and we are hoping to have the 15+m vis that we had up there last weekend. Em & Adam’s trip to Bali was fantastic diving. A couple of the highlights were seeing Mola Mola, drift diving when the current takes you away for kilometers over stunning reef, then changes direction and takes you back to the boat! Thanks to all the gang who joined us, we are looking forward to our next overseas adventures with you all.

Now the countdown is on for Rowan’s trip toTonga– only 4 more sleeps until they are snorkelling & freediving with whales and scuba diving over lovely reefs and in caves!

I have found that a divers attachment to thier fins can be likened to a person’s attachment to a loved pair of ugg boots. Unless there has been a drastic breakage or robbery, convincing a diver to try a new pair of fins can be near futile. I am a diver that falls into this category. I actually deployed on active warlike service with my ugg boots, and I feel similarly attached to my hot pink split fins.

But when I first saw the weird looking Scubapro seawing nova fins I was intrigued at how they worked. After I learned they had won a reddot design award I was curious to try them. When I picked them and and felt how light they were my decision was made- they would be perfect for travel. So I packed a white pair with fluro hot pink heel straps on my trip to Bali.

When putting these fins on the first thing I noticed was that my boot sat deep within the pocket. Unlike my split fins the heel of the fin sat under the full length of my foot – I was told this is to minimise leg strain and maximise the propulsion.

I expected these fins to be a lot firmer moving through the water than my split fins, but true to the design claim, the articulated joint allowed a similar propulsion to my split fins without a noticeable increase in kick effort. In fact, by the end of the dive I had forgotten that I was wearing an entirely different fin than I was used to using. So they definitely get a tick for comfort.

Indonesia is well known for having currents and this is where I found that the seawing nova stood out. Moving through the current the seawing nova definitely gave me better propulsion than my split fins. Yet I was still not convinced. So when I got home I took them for my final test; a dive at Fly point, when I was teaching, and carrying extra weights. Again, I was pleasantly surprised.

While I am not yet prepared to say goodbye to my split fins, I have found I am now faced with a tough choice of which fin I will wear each dive. Overall I have been very impressed with the Scubapro seawing nova, and with a full retail price of just $250 I think they will prove to be a very popular fin this summer. The curiosity factor will tempt even the most devoted fin owners. I dare you to be bold and try them.
